Striving to capture the ability to determine the mood of a group, a community, a nation, or the world by tapping into microblogging services and social networks would be power the likes of which we have never before encountered.

Most notably today’s official launch by Microsoft Corp. of the latest version of its Office, adding new Internet features aimed at fending off a challenge from Google Inc. The new release includes social-networking features embedded in its Outlook email program. People will also be able to run word-processing software Word, spreadsheet-maker Excel and other applications through Web browsers and edit documents together with other users. This can best be likened to writing a “Dear John” letter with the whole world watching or preparing your personal finances using a spreadsheet with the quiet observation of the credit bureau.
Of course we will be assured that this information is confidential – but do NOT be fooled. Litigation is abundant where online companies continue to violate this confidentiality by providing your data to outside parties. It equates to making $100 thousand, then being fined $500 for the violation.
